Somatic Movement for Tango
Somatic Movement for Tango is an approach that combines tools from the Body-Mind Centering® school of embodiment, developmental movement patterns and behavior, movement analysis, and dance therapy, as well as elements of contact improvisation, meditation, and psychology.
My aim is not to teach Argentine Tango as a form but to explore how you can use its elements to cultivate a deeper connection with your body and navigate emotional and psychological states with greater awareness.
This practice helps shift habitual movement patterns—both in dance and in life—making you more adaptable to different partners, situations, and expressions. The goal isn't just to dance better but to feel better, to connect more deeply with yourself and others, and to discover a more fluid, responsive way of moving through both tango and life.

GET TO KNOW
Who is this for?
In the Somatic Tango approach it is possible to:
create more clarity about your body awareness, physiology, and biomechanics
improve your technique, balance and find comfort in movement
become more sensitive to yourself, your partner, and learn to 'listen' and 'speak' through the body
develop movement from inside out which leads to clarity in leading and receptivity in following
have more emotional expression of the music through the embrace
practice various types of touch for a meaningful connection
refine non-verbal communication in both leading and following
understand your body patterns, both physical and emotional, to overcome limitations and discover creativity
discover your habitual patterns of movement, behavior and gradually change them
learn to express the music in your own way rather than relying on prescribed formulas
dance solo and adapt to different types of partners
find new tools to enrich and deepen your tango learning
enjoy, flow and dance your own expression of tango
What to expect?
These sessions are not a replacement for tango classes or individual therapy. They can definitely be technical and therapeutic, give more information about your body and mind, your personal movement and psychological patterns of behaviour, and provide tools for further exploration. However, if you want to learn tango figures and basic technique, it's advisable that you combine these sessions with tango classes. Similarly, if you are experiencing trauma or want to explore your psychological traits further, it's advisable to find a qualified therapist to accompany you during this process.

the focus of these sessions is on the internal process, connection and your own body posture, awareness and movement
we will not be learning tango figures, steps and embellishments to copy and repeat
we might be taking certain basic tango steps to understand the body better or improve the connection
we might be looking at anatomy in images and videos to see how your body works
we will be using meditative practices and exercises to connect with yourself and your partner
we might be using some exercises from contact improvisation, somatic psychology, dance therapy and other disciplines working with body awareness
we will be working barefoot, sometimes lying on the floor and in comfortable clothes, as well as with tango shoes/heels
we will be discussing what you sense and how you feel emotionally more than how well you do the step
we will focus on your own dance, not what tango 'should be'
we will be feeling and expressing the music but not learning 'tango musicality'
